From one of America's finest historical novelists, author also of 'Cassandra, The Most Beautiful of Priam's Daughters A Tale of Troy'
Death Waltz in Vienna is a novel of both suspense and romance set in the capital of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire in the years prior to World War I. Army captain Ernst von Falkenburg has just one week to clear himself of charges of treason that will otherwise cost him his life. During this time a romance develops with a beautiful woman who not merely provides him with indispensable assistance – at the risk of her life – but who shows him for the first time that he is capable of love.
The action moves across the whole panorama of early 20th century Vienna, taking the reader through elegant salons and low dives, Vienna’s most fashionable brothel and the imperial palace, and climaxes in a duel to the death and an epilogue set in Vienna’s Central Cemetery.
THOMAS OCHILTREE (pronounced OH-kul-tree) was born in New York City but grew up in London and studied in the U.S. (Harvard Class of 1970). He is a retired Foreign Service Officer who served in many countries during his 22 years as a U.S. diplomat. Fluent in German, he has long been fascinated with the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire --- with its glittering capital Vienna --- the background against which his novel DEATH WALTZ IN VIENNA is set. In addition to devoting himself to his various literary interests, he works part time on line as a translator, translating documents from German, French, Italian and Spanish into English. He does not have a Facebook or Twitter account, but would be glad to receive or respond to any reader comments on his novel at Ochiltreeth@yahoo.com.
This was his first novel. A second novel, CASSANDRA, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF PRIAM'S DAUGHTERS A TALE OF TROY, was published in October 2013.

Death Waltz in Vienna edition by Thomas Ochiltree Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
If James Bond had lived in Vienna during this time period, he would have been this guy. The story was fast-paced, exciting, and kept you guessing. In the spirit of 007, the hero is indefatigable in a fight or in bed; however there is a time limit, so the hero's lack of need for sleep is understandable. Unlike other books, where the author tries to write foreign languages in English by injecting random foreign words, this author actually uses the language in a way that enhances the story. There were a couple of instances of word confusion-she instead of the-but that could have been formatting. I really recommend this one.
"By morning he would be dead or disgraced" was the first passage that caught my attention as a military man was ensnared in a web of deceit that would cost him his life unless he could unravel the plot in time. Book became a tautly written mystery complete with a large cast of well-developed characters and even some old-fashioned romance thrown in for good measure (this book is set in the year 1906, after all). Might have earned 5 stars were it not for some editing issues, but story still turned out to be one I really enjoyed! I'll leave you with one final passage "Helena, my enemies are very cunning, very determined, very dangerous." Very good book!
Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed this book. Having spent several summers in Vienna, I especially enjoyed all the street names and real directions that are built into the story. The book kept my interest right up to the end, which might be tough since we all know that the hero will live through it all, but none the less it was really nicely put together.
This was a wonderful explanation of the chivalry that still held the Western cultures Before the First World War. The word honor still held a meaning and though it was carried too far in some respects, not doing a dishonorable act could still hold a man to his course. Since that is not a thought we hold today it will be difficult for modern readers to understand a man like this hero and others like the heroes of Anthony Hope or Gene Stratton Porter. Ah, it was a golden time for novels at least.
I heard about this being on sale from Book Bub. I checked it out and had figured that it wasn't for me when I came across Le Grand Chat Rouge's comment to a 1-star review. Le Grand Chat Rouge said that it had no explicit/graphic sex or foul language, so I decided to purchase it after all.
I'm very glad that I did. I bought it yesterday, and finished it today. I loved it. I'm very happy that I got it. I liked the characters, the plotting, the writing, and I didn't see the twist coming at the end. I loved the part that honor played in the plot.
There were a fair number of typos in it, which I reported, but nothing that would interfere with readability. Just things you notice, report, and move on. I love the ability to report errors while I'm reading.
I thought he did a bang-up job with this and I'm highly recommending it.
I really enjoyed this mystery set in 19th century Vienna. The story was good and well written the characters interesting. The detailed background of the story was a special bonus. The historical period is well described as are the social rules of the time, which drive the action of the characters. The background was detailed enough to be interesting and render the characters more understandable, but not drawn out so much as to interfere with the action. I am looking forward to a sequel, and other books by this author.
Set in late 1800's Vienna, this book offers a look at cultural and social attitudes as well as the issues leading to the eventual dismantlement of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire. Old traditions are adhered to, honor is everything, and when an army captain is unable to pay his debts, the only honorable way out is to shoot himself.
An impoverished captain from an aristocratic family is framed and given a week to prove his innocence. If not, he must kill himself. Captain Von Falkenburg wants to live, he's just fallen in love, and he determines to find out who set him up and why. He hasn't a clue, but he follows a string of minor hunches. His hunt takes him into both the rich and the seamy sides of Vienna. A grim view of Franz-Joseph in his waning years, an emperor who worked sixteen hours a day to rule his motley people, and who struggled to arrest the approaching demise of his empire. The final two scenes, high stakes baccarat and a duel, had me racing through the pages.
However, the writing verges on dry, is repetitious, disjointed in places, and goes on for too long. Von Falkenb'''urg is a cold and distant character. While I shared his urgency to solve the mystery and absolve himself from blame, I never felt a gripping concern for his fate.

However, he has been brought up in a world where a gentleman's honor is believed to be more precious than life; a principle for which men sometimes give their lives. Now, he is faced with the most important decision of his life, a decision to be made on that very principle.
