The greatest Spanish monarch, King of Castile and Leon, St. Fernando III was born in the year 1199 - exactly 100 years after the death of his
illustrious ancestor, El Cid. In him would be combined the soul of a knight dedicated entirely to God, the irresistible power of the Cid, and
due to his royal heritage, the authority to marshal the might of an entire kingdom against the enemies of Christ. Personally leading his
armies into battle, he took back more territory from Islam than any other king in history. First cousin of St. Louis IX of France, he died a
saintly death in the year 1252. His incorrupt body can still be seen in the Cathedral of Seville, and his feastday, May 30th, is a holy
day of obligation in Spain.

I’m an avid reader of all things related to the Medieval Crusades and this includes the lesser known events of the Reconquista (730s-1492) on the Iberian Peninsula. Mr Fitzhenry’s books on Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, better known as the Cid (El Cid) and King Fernando III of Castile and Leon were a refreshing look at key individuals of the period. Though neither book really focuses on the tactical details of the battles they fought, yes against both Muslim/Moorish and Christian opponents, they do a great job of letting the reader get a sense of what’s taking place. Both books are more of a character study. They are perfect for a parent that wants to read to their children about concepts of chivalry and knightly virtues based on historical events (sorry King Arthur fans).

I recommend both of them to young readers interested in the topic of the Reconquista and overall Crusades topics in general.

The good news on the winds is that he’ll be publishing another book on the exploits of the Crusading Military Order-Knights of Malta (formerly known as the Hospitallers) at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. If it’s anything like the previous two, then count me in!

Saint Fernando III A Kingdom for Christ James Fitzhenry 9780979630118 Books Reviews

Did you know that one of the greatest kings in Spanish history, Fernando III, was also a saint? I didn't. But thanks to author James Fitzhenry, I do now. Fitzhenry, who also penned El Cid God's Own Champion, has written this detailed yet approachable biography of this fascinating and inspiring example of Catholic manhood. St. Fernando III A Kingdom for Christ is geared toward Catholic homeschooled kids, probably in the twelve and older age range. But the writing is exceptional and as a mature reader of nearly 40, the book easily held my attention.

Replete with family turmoil, civil strife, stunning miracles, romance, and dozens upon dozens of skirmishes, pitched battles, and sieges, the tremendous scope of St. Fernando's worldly accomplishments leave the reader dumbfounded. But the heart of this book is St. Fernando's total devotion to Christ and his Blessed Mother. Everything he did, he offered to God without reservation. In his willingness to suffer personal hardships, unfailing mercy toward his enemies, love for his wife and children, and care for the poor and afflicted, St. Fernando was a model of Christian virtue. In his everyday life, and especially when he faced a crisis, he turned to the Virgin and believed to the depths of his soul that she would intercede for him. And based on the magnificent achievements of his life, who can doubt that she did? For at the same time that the Christian states in the Holy Land were failing despite the best efforts of great crusading armies led by the most important crowned heads of Europe, St. Fernando was able to weld together the small kingdoms of Castile and Leon and use their combined might to reconquer almost all of Andalusia from its Muslim overlords.

So in short, this book is a gem. St. Fernando III is a Catholic hero who deserves to be more widely known. Now thanks to James Fitzhenry and his enjoyable book, he will be.
A must read, an all time great!
Great book and talented writer!
This is a great book. Very edifying. The way Kings should live not for themselves but for God and their subjects.
Loved it, could not put it down! I would highly recommend this for all ages. The history and richness of the faith shared of Saint Fernando III is a must for this day and age. I've recommended this book to many already, including fellow parents, teachers, clergy, and friends.
This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I would highly recommend it .
I think this is a book written for young boys and I am not the target audience as I am a grown woman! I loved it nonetheless. It is a true story of a king and saint in medieval Spain and it is full of supernatural events and loads of battles and honor and chivalry and smiting. If you don’t like these, you won’t like this book. So interested was I in the subject matter after reading that I did some research about the saint and his times, which pretty much confirms the book. The style is very uneven and sometimes a little childish and there are a few gaps which I would have liked filled it. I would have preferred a more comprehensive history but I still give it 5 stars for the interest of the subject matter and the light it shed for me on a subject and era I was very unfamiliar with. I should warn it is very politically incorrect!!
